First lodging at the Northshore Hostel in Wailuku. We have stayed here before, and it is a great hostel (very friendly). We spent much of the day shopping for food and repair parts for snorkeling equipment. I feel compelled to comment: One of the reasons we really enjoy hostels is connecting with people. More and more people are sitting around connected into their social network rather than interacting with other folks, so here I sit, plugged into Facebook.

Then there is the needle, in Iao Valley State Park, just a few miles up the road from our hostel in Wailuku.

We descended a cliff via banyon tree roots. Excellent hand holds. The quest was for a waterfall ... a rarity on this part of the island.

Upper Makamaka'ole Falls. (The name means "without friends" ... read on.) There are many tiers to the fall, but this was the only reasonably safe level to access. Having said that, on the way out I still managed to slip on some slippery rock, landed on my knee in a most unkind way, and hoping I havent bugggered my trip up. I was able to walk and hike the rest of the day, but now bed bound unable to really move my leg much.

The Olivine Pools provide a fun spot to swim on an otherwise viscious shore.

Some old Hawaii in present time: sugar cane is still grown and processed on Maui.

    MJR_4345-1.jpg

We have our own little sugar shack for the next six days on the flank of Haleakala Vocano in the high country of Makawao ... aloha cowboy country.

We are now in Makawao (rhymes with now) and last night was a street celebration in town with quite a bit of live music. Don't know who this fellow is, but he was the best, playing some great guitar and folksy reggae. I would love to go see him again anywhere.
